The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly raided the residence of Lawal Mu’azu-Obah, a former aide to Niger State Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, in the early hours of Monday, with allegations that he was assaulted and arrested during the operation.
Mu’azu-Obah was reportedly taken to the Maitumbi Police Division in Minna before being transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters.
The source also alleged that police operatives confiscated the mobile phones belonging to Mu’azu-Obah and his wife during the raid.
Arrest Allegedly Linked to Political Activities
According to the source, the arrest may be connected to Mu’azu-Obah’s recent political activities and his support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Shiroro Constituency seat, Dr Ibrahim Kuta.
Mu’azu-Obah previously served in the Office of the Deputy Governor, where he defended his former principal and the Niger State Government.
However, he has recently been involved in activities promoting Kuta’s candidacy and has also been calling for the release of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The source alleged that the development followed an All Progressives Congress (APC) programme held in Kuta on Saturday.
During the event, the ADC candidate was reportedly booed by some attendees, with the phrase “Bamuayi,” meaning “We don’t like you,” allegedly heard at the gathering.
The incident was said to have angered supporters of APC candidates believed to be backed by the deputy governor.
Wife Allegedly Witnessed Assault
The source further alleged that Mu’azu-Obah was assaulted during the early-morning operation in the presence of his wife.
However, the allegations of assault, as well as the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest, could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
The reason for the arrest has also not been officially disclosed by the police.
Police Yet to Confirm Arrest
When contacted on Monday morning for a response to the reported arrest and allegations of assault, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said he needed time to verify the development.
Abiodun indicated that the police would confirm the details before providing further information.
“Will verify please,” the police spokesperson said.
The development comes amid heightened political activities across Nigeria as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
