The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has held a one-day strategic retreat with the leadership of various Military Veterans’ Associations to strengthen collaboration, improve veterans’ welfare and reinforce their continued role in national development.
The retreat, organised in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria (RANAO), took place at the Army Headquarters Command Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja. It provided a platform for dialogue and renewed commitment to addressing the concerns of retired military personnel who dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, reaffirmed the Defence Headquarters’ commitment to maintaining regular engagement with military veterans, describing dialogue as the most effective means of resolving issues affecting retired personnel.

He stated that the welfare of veterans remains a top priority for the Defence Headquarters under the leadership of General Olufemi Oluyede. He also assured participants that efforts were underway to implement the recently approved salary increase and the corresponding pension adjustments through the appropriate statutory processes.
The Defence Headquarters also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his continued support for members of the Armed Forces. Veterans were urged to remain patient while maintaining the discipline, loyalty and patriotism that have long defined the Nigerian military.
The CDS further assured the retired personnel of continued efforts to improve healthcare services, ensure timely pension payments and enhance welfare packages.
The retreat highlighted the importance of stronger cooperation among veterans’ associations and encouraged retired service personnel to continue contributing to nation-building by mentoring younger generations and supporting initiatives that promote national unity and national security.
