ECOWAS DEFENCE CHIEFS SEEK SUSTAINED NIGERIAN SUPPORT FOR REGIONAL SECURITY

The outgoing and incoming Chairmen of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff have sought sustained Nigerian support for regional security efforts during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

The outgoing Chairman and Sierra Leone’s Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Amara Idara Bangura, commended Nigeria for its contributions to peacekeeping, counter-terrorism operations and security cooperation across West Africa.

He also acknowledged Nigeria’s historical support for Sierra Leone during its civil war and subsequent peacebuilding efforts, urging the country to extend the same support to his successor.

The incoming Chairman, Senegal’s Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Oumar Wade, highlighted persistent security threats facing the sub-region, including terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and maritime insecurity.

He called for Nigeria’s continued guidance, support and active participation in ECOWAS security initiatives to strengthen the committee’s capacity to address these challenges.

Responding, General Oluyede reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and collective security, stressing the need for unity and stronger cooperation among ECOWAS member states.

He urged countries in the sub-region to set aside political differences and bilateral disagreements to confront shared security threats, noting that no country could effectively secure itself in isolation.

The CDS assured Vice Admiral Wade of Nigeria’s continued support and pledged the country’s commitment to strengthening the ECOWAS collective security framework for regional peace, integration and development.
