Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has said his public disagreement with Nigerian music star Wizkid achieved more than many people realised, insisting the controversy helped spotlight important conversations about his father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy.
Speaking during an appearance on TVC’s Your View, Seun reflected on the online exchange that sparked widespread debate earlier this year.
Asked whether the dispute with Wizkid accomplished anything, Seun replied that it had a significant impact.
“I think it achieved a lot. The point I’m trying to make is that it’s still not acceptable for one to claim to be aligned with the ideals of someone and at the same time consciously work to drag that person’s name down. That doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.
The singer maintained that his position was about protecting the legacy and ideals associated with his late father rather than engaging in unnecessary online feuds.
During the interview, Seun also declined to comment on social media critic VeryDarkMan’s role in national issues when asked whether the activist was fighting to liberate Nigeria.
Instead, he suggested that the TV station invite VeryDarkMan to answer questions about his activities directly.
On whether he considers himself arrogant, Seun dismissed the suggestion, saying his confidence comes from knowledge rather than personal pride.
The interview comes about six months after Seun Kuti and Wizkid’s online disagreement generated widespread reactions and reignited conversations about Fela’s influence on Nigerian music and culture.
