‘Marriage more tasking for women’, says Actor Uzor Arukwe

Actor Uzor Arukwe has stated that marriage demands more from women, stressing that a woman’s identity should not be tied to marital status.

The actor made this known while speaking on the In My Opinion podcast, in a clip shared on Instagram.

According to Arukwe, the physical and social responsibilities that come with marriage make it more demanding for women, which is why he has never strongly advocated for it.
“I’ve never really been an advocate of marriage because I feel like it’s more tasking for the woman. She’s the one that bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen,” he said.

He noted that there is a growing shift in societal thinking, with more people acknowledging that a woman’s value is not determined by marriage.
“So, I feel society is now beginning to catch on to the fact that marriage doesn’t define or make a woman,” he added.

Speaking further on societal pressure, Arukwe recalled how women were often questioned for not being married by 25 or 30, with comparisons to earlier generations who already had children at that age.

He, however, observed that times have changed, with some women now making a conscious choice not to marry or have children.

“Growing up, people would ask you why you weren’t married at 25 or 30 and talk about how they already had five children by that age. Now, there are even women who don’t want to have children. I’ve met at least two or three,” he said.
