Naval Base Abuja has held a seminar to deepen personnel’s understanding of the role of the Armed Forces in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The seminar, held on Monday, 14 September 2026, focused on the constitutional responsibilities and professional conduct expected of military personnel deployed for electoral duties.
The event was organised in line with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), aimed at building a mission-ready force dedicated to excellence and service to the nation.
Speaking at the seminar, the Commander, Naval Base Abuja, Commodore Oluseyi Oladipo, described the programme as timely, given the forthcoming 2027 General Elections.
He noted that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in aid of civil authority, are expected to support the democratic process by providing the necessary security environment for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

According to him, the CNS had directed Commands, Formations, Establishments and Bases to organise similar seminars to enhance personnel’s understanding of the constitutional and legal framework governing their participation in electoral duties.
Delivering the keynote address, the Special Guest of Honour, Right Honourable Onofiok Luke, a lawyer and distinguished legislator, described elections as civic exercises through which citizens freely exercise their right to choose their leaders without fear or intimidation.
He noted that the Armed Forces remain critical to election security, particularly in areas affected by insecurity, while emphasising the need for professionalism, political neutrality, respect for human rights and clearly defined roles for personnel deployed during elections.
Luke also acknowledged concerns surrounding military involvement in elections, including perceptions of intimidation, partisanship and interference in the electoral process.
He urged the Armed Forces to maintain professionalism and serve as facilitators of a secure and peaceful environment that supports the growth and consolidation of democracy.
The seminar featured a panel discussion on the constitutional and legal framework governing election security, responsibilities of security personnel, challenges associated with military deployment during elections, and measures to enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
The event reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to supporting democratic governance and contributing to a peaceful, secure and credible electoral process.
