Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for Africa’s demand for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council, describing the continent’s limited representation in global decision-making as an issue requiring attention.
Putin made the position known during the Third Russia-Africa Summit held in Moscow on October 28 and 29, 2026, which brought together representatives from 48 African countries, including 22 heads of state and government.
Addressing African leaders at the summit, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to strengthening relations with African countries, insisting that Russian businesses operate on the basis of integrity, mutual respect and shared benefits.
He argued that, unlike the exploitative practices he attributed to former colonial powers, Russian companies invest and reinvest their earnings in African economies, transfer technology, establish production facilities and create employment opportunities.
Putin also reiterated Russia’s support for greater African participation in global decision-making institutions, including the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions.
The summit’s final declaration further called for reforms to global governance structures, greater African representation and expanded cooperation between Russia and African countries in trade, security, energy and technology.
However, Russia’s renewed diplomatic engagement with Africa comes amid growing global competition for influence on the continent, with major powers seeking stronger economic, political and security partnerships with African governments.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
Against this background, a number of questions arise:
1. Is Russia genuinely committed to advancing Africa’s interests, or does its support also serve its own geopolitical ambitions?
2. What does Russia stand to gain from supporting Africa’s quest for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council?
3. Can African countries trust Russia’s assurances of a fair and mutually beneficial partnership?
4. With Russia, China, the United States and European powers seeking stronger ties with Africa, how can the continent protect its sovereignty and negotiate partnerships that genuinely benefit its people?
5. More importantly, is Africa prepared to take advantage of this growing global interest to strengthen its position in international affairs?
What is your take on Putin’s position and Russia’s growing relationship with Africa?
