The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged a plot by individuals linked to the Rainbow Coalition to influence the outcome of the forthcoming election in the state.
The party specifically raised concerns over the alleged involvement of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Professor Princewill Chike, whom it accused of being affiliated with the Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party socio-political movement associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The allegation was made by the Rivers State ADC Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, who claimed that there were indications that the Vice Chancellor could be involved in nominating returning officers for the forthcoming election.
Enyi alleged that Professor Chike had publicly identified with the coalition and claimed that his appointment as Vice Chancellor was recommended by Wike.
According to the ADC spokesperson, a signpost displayed at the entrance of the university carries the inscription, “Academia Rainbow Coalition of the Renewed Hope,” alongside the Vice Chancellor’s photograph.
Enyi questioned the possibility of individuals affiliated with the coalition being recommended to serve as returning officers during the election.
He alleged that the development could compromise the credibility of the electoral process and called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that election officials are selected independently and transparently.
The ADC spokesperson further challenged the Vice Chancellor to demonstrate that individuals recommended for electoral duties would not be selected on the basis of political affiliation.
The allegations have raised fresh concerns about political neutrality and the role of institutions and individuals associated with political movements ahead of the forthcoming election.
However, the claims by the ADC are allegations and would require independent verification. Professor Princewill Chike and other individuals mentioned in the allegations were not quoted in the statement as responding to the claims.
The controversy comes amid heightened political activity in Rivers State as political parties intensify preparations for the forthcoming election.
