The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, identified as Innocent Emmanuel, over the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in the New Etete area of Benin City.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement, saying the suspect was arrested after the police received a report concerning the alleged sexual assault of the minor.
According to the statement, the suspect allegedly assaulted the girl while her parents were away from home.
The complainant reportedly told the police that the child had previously disclosed that she had been subjected to repeated sexual harassment by the same suspect.
Following the report, police operatives arrested Emmanuel and took him into custody for investigation.
The victim was also taken to a hospital for medical examination and appropriate care.
The police spokesperson said investigation into the matter was ongoing.
She added that the suspect would be charged before a court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
