Wike Orders Immediate End to Use of FCT Green Areas as Car Lots

ABUJA — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate stoppage of the use of green areas, parks and gardens in Abuja as car dealership lots and for other unauthorised commercial activities.
The directive, announced on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, is part of efforts by the FCT Administration to address flooding in parts of the Federal Capital City and preserve areas designated for recreation and environmental purposes.
According to a statement by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike expressed concern over the conversion of spaces meant for parks and recreation into commercial facilities.
The Minister specifically cited areas designated for recreational activities, including Millennium Park, which have allegedly been used as car lots.
To enforce the directive, the FCT Administration has established a task force to monitor compliance and ensure that unauthorised activities in designated green areas are stopped.
Wike has also ordered an investigation into civil servants allegedly responsible for granting illegal approvals for the use of green areas as car dealership lots.
Those affected include directors overseeing Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs. They have been summoned by the FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan.
The administration said the enforcement measures are intended to protect Abuja’s designated green spaces while supporting efforts to improve environmental management and tackle flooding across the capital.
The directive is expected to affect operators occupying green areas and other spaces designated for public recreation without valid authorisation
