Abuja – A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to produce Abuja-based estate agent Rebecca Omokamo in court after she failed to appear for the continuation of her trial over alleged land fraud.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the order on Tuesday following an application by EFCC counsel, Benedict Ubi, and adjourned the criminal proceedings until July 23.
Omokamo is standing trial alongside Homadil Realty Limited, Idakwogi Richard John, and Rychado Homes Limited on charges bordering on alleged land fraud, forgery, and money laundering.
During the proceedings, the prosecution informed the court that the first defendant had remained under what it described as a “self-imposed house arrest” following the court’s interim forfeiture order on a disputed property.
The EFCC further alleged that Omokamo obstructed its operatives from enforcing the court’s order and violated the conditions of her administrative bail by travelling outside the court’s jurisdiction on several occasions.
However, counsel to the defendant, Christopher Oshomeghie (SAN), disputed the allegations, telling the court that EFCC operatives had maintained surveillance around his client’s residence for about 23 days, leaving her afraid to leave the premises.
He argued that the prolonged situation had affected her health and was responsible for her absence from court.
The prosecution dismissed the claim, insisting that Omokamo had voluntarily remained inside the apartment and retained possession of the keys, adding that EFCC officers had not prevented her from attending court.
After hearing submissions from both parties, Justice Abdulmalik ordered the anti-graft agency to ensure Omokamo is produced before the court at the next hearing.
The judge also heard a related civil suit filed by the EFCC against the defendant and adjourned that matter until October 15 for the hearing of pending applications.
The case is expected to continue on July 23, when the court will resume proceedings in the criminal trial.
