The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Africa CDC, has called on the United States to lift travel restrictions on Uganda, saying the country has contained its Ebola outbreak.
Uganda discharged its last Ebola patient earlier this month and has not reported a new case in three weeks, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said at the African Union health summit in Ghana. He cautioned against penalizing countries for transparency on disease outbreaks.
As the outbreak spread across the region, the US has recently tightened travel restrictions on Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

The DRC’s epidemic is worsening rapidly, with more than 2,300 confirmed cases and over 900 deaths since May, but Kaseya has opposed travel bans.
Africa CDC said it would need close to 1.4 billion dollars to contain the outbreak, warning that without urgent international funding and greater disease surveillance, the crisis could become the worst Ebola outbreak on record.
