Germany has commended Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting peace and security in West Africa, describing the country as an anchor of stability in the sub-region.
The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stefan Rossel, made the commendation on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.
In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Ambassador reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding bilateral relations with Nigeria, particularly in defence and security cooperation.
Rossel described Nigeria as a valued partner of Germany and expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between both countries would create opportunities for mutually beneficial projects and initiatives.
The visit also featured a briefing by the German Technical Advisory Group (G-TAG) on the progress and impact of its ongoing training support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), particularly in areas aimed at strengthening professional competence and operational capacity.
Responding, General Oluyede appreciated the German Government for its continued partnership and support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He specifically acknowledged G-TAG’s contributions to the development of the Mechatronics School, Combat Tactical Care Training and Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Training, as well as other capacity-building initiatives and material support.
The CDS called for sustained and expanded defence cooperation, particularly in specialised military training and professional development. He also advocated increased opportunities for strategic and advanced courses for officers and soldiers to enhance their professional competencies and operational effectiveness.
General Oluyede assured the Ambassador of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s readiness to consolidate the existing partnership and explore additional areas of cooperation to address emerging security challenges and advance the shared interests of both countries.
The visit further underscores the enduring defence relations between Nigeria and Germany and their shared commitment to strengthening military capacity, promoting regional stability and enhancing international security cooperation.
