NLC to Launch Nationwide Campaign for Minimum Wage, Pension Review

NLC President Joe Ajaero disclosed the plan during the inauguration of the Godwin Abumisi Pensioners’ Legacy House and Multipurpose Hall in Abuja, saying the labour movement intends to pursue reforms that benefit both active workers and pensioners.

According to Ajaero, organised labour is currently preparing for what he described as a major national campaign aimed at securing a comprehensive review of the country’s minimum wage framework.

He said the Congress would no longer focus solely on improving workers’ salaries but would also intensify efforts to ensure retirees receive adequate financial support after years of service.

The labour leader described the living conditions of many pensioners as unacceptable, arguing that those who dedicated their productive years to public service should not be left struggling to meet basic needs after retirement.

Ajaero noted that persistent inflation and the rising cost of living have significantly reduced the purchasing power of retirees, making it increasingly difficult for many to afford essential goods and services.

He also called on the government to clear outstanding pension arrears and implement reforms that would guarantee a sustainable pension system capable of providing financial security and dignity for retired workers.

The planned campaign comes amid growing concerns over the impact of inflation on household incomes and is expected to reignite discussions on wage adjustments, pension reforms, and broader worker welfare across Nigeria.
