The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has handed over 18 bags of suspected cannabis sativa weighing approximately 756 kilograms to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
The handover ceremony took place on Friday, 17 July 2026, with the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, formally presenting the seized illicit substances to the Deputy Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Luka Yerima.
Speaking during the event, Commodore Adams-Aliu said the handover underscores the Nigerian Navy’s unwavering commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at dismantling illicit drug trafficking networks through sustained inter-agency collaboration. He stressed that the Navy remains resolute in ensuring that Nigeria’s maritime domain and adjoining coastal communities are not exploited as transit routes or safe havens for criminal activities.
According to him, the successful seizures were made possible through persistent surveillance by the Western Regional Control Centre, codenamed Falcon Eye, a maritime surveillance system that has significantly enhanced operational effectiveness within the nation’s coastal environment.
He noted that the achievement aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal), to build a technologically driven Navy with robust surveillance capabilities capable of denying criminal elements freedom of action within Nigeria’s maritime space.

The commander explained that the recovered consignments were intercepted during a series of intelligence-driven operations carried out by the NNS BEECROFT Quick Response Team in collaboration with the Western Regional Control Centre (Falcon Eye).
He disclosed that five bags of suspected cannabis sativa were intercepted at Abule Osun on 7 April 2026, two bags at Ikare Island on 13 April 2026, while 11 bags were seized at Alfa Beach on 15 July 2026, bringing the total number of recovered bags to 18, with an estimated combined weight of 756 kilograms.
Commodore Adams-Aliu said the successful operations demonstrate the vigilance, professionalism and operational readiness of NNS BEECROFT personnel in disrupting criminal activities within the maritime domain.
Receiving the exhibits on behalf of the NDLEA, the Deputy Marine Commander, Commander of Narcotics Luka Yerima, commended the Nigerian Navy for its sustained efforts in combating drug trafficking and expressed appreciation for the existing collaboration between both agencies. He called for even stronger cooperation to effectively tackle maritime-related crimes.
The Commander of NNS BEECROFT reaffirmed that the Base will continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations and strengthen collaboration with relevant security and law enforcement agencies in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and other maritime crimes.
He added that NNS BEECROFT remains committed to actualising the mission of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal), which is to deploy a highly motivated and professional naval force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests while contributing effectively to joint operations in defence of national sovereignty and the maintenance of internal stability.
