The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has been shot dead in Zamfara State.
The university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, announced his death in a statement on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
According to the statement, Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
Marafa was appointed Bursar of NOUN on September 17, 2022, for a five-year tenure scheduled to end in September 2027.
The Registrar described him as a dedicated administrator who served the university meritoriously and held various positions of responsibility during his career.
The university expressed condolences to his family, colleagues and the entire NOUN community, while prayers were offered for the repose of his soul.
Further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident and burial arrangements are expected to be released by the family.
