‘One painful night shouldn’t erase 20 years’ – AY speaks on Cardiff show fallout, apologises to fans

Popular comedian AY Makun has apologised to fans disappointed by his Cardiff comedy show and announced plans for a free return performance as part of his efforts to address the controversy.

AY made the announcement in an extensive Instagram statement, in which he also responded to calls for him to be cancelled following the incident.

The comedian said he found it painful that one difficult experience could overshadow more than two decades of work and commitment to his audience. He questioned why negative reports about him generated so much excitement compared with his professional achievements.

AY explained that some respected members of the industry had advised him to remain silent and allow the matter to fade. However, he decided to speak because he believed the people who paid for the show deserved an explanation.

He said he had encountered repeated challenges during the tour, including situations where payment promises were allegedly not honoured. According to him, he had sometimes used his own money to pay colleagues.

AY added that a five-hour journey from Sheffield to Cardiff, followed by another difficult experience, left him feeling that he had reached his limit.

The comedian, however, acknowledged that the fans who waited at the venue were not responsible for the circumstances that led to the disappointment.

He offered an apology for the inconvenience, wasted time and upset experienced by attendees.

AY also encouraged the public to watch his video to hear his explanation, saying people were free to disagree with his decision but should also consider his perspective.

He maintained that calls for cancellation would not make him abandon the career he had spent years building. Instead, he said he would learn from the experience and continue his work.

In a move aimed at making amends, AY announced that he intended to return to Cardiff for a free comedy show at his personal expense. He clarified that the plan was subject to confirmation of the venue and other arrangements.

Importantly, the comedian stressed that the proposed free event would not serve as a replacement for any refunds owed to people who paid for the original show.

He concluded by thanking supporters and those who offered constructive criticism, reaffirming his commitment to entertaining audiences.
