Operation HADIN KAI Showcases Successes as Foreign Media Visits Theatre Headquarters

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – The Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has reaffirmed that the military continues to make significant progress in the fight against terrorism across Nigeria’s North-East, citing improved security, the return of displaced persons, and sustained operations against terrorist groups.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by an Italian media delegation led by African Voices Bureau Chief, Mr. Valerio Cataldi, at the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri, the Theatre Commander said the operation remains focused on restoring lasting peace and creating a secure environment for socio-economic development in the region.

Major General Abubakar noted that the Armed Forces have intensified intelligence-driven operations alongside conventional military offensives, leading to the disruption of terrorist logistics networks and improved operational outcomes.

According to him, the ongoing campaign has strengthened the protection of vulnerable communities, enabled thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to return to their communities, improved security for farming activities, and facilitated the recovery of weapons and other military equipment previously used by terrorist groups.

He also disclosed that several terrorist commanders, fighters, and logistics collaborators have surrendered as military pressure continues to weaken insurgent networks operating within the North-East.

The Theatre Commander emphasized that all military operations are conducted in accordance with International Humanitarian Law and the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s Rules of Engagement, stressing that protecting civilians remains a key operational priority throughout the campaign.

While acknowledging emerging threats such as the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and armed drones by terrorist groups, he said the military has strengthened its operational capabilities through specialised training, technological innovation, and collaboration with strategic partners to counter evolving security challenges.

Major General Abubakar further highlighted the important role of the media in supporting national security efforts by providing factual information and countering misinformation surrounding military operations.

Speaking during the visit, the leader of the Italian media delegation, Mr. Valerio Cataldi, commended the Nigerian military for the reception and comprehensive briefing provided to his team.

He explained that the visit was designed to give international audiences an objective understanding of the sacrifices, resilience, and achievements of Operation HADIN KAI in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

Cataldi added that the delegation would document the humanitarian impact of terrorism, the experiences of affected communities, and the progress recorded by the Armed Forces of Nigeria through engagements with military personnel, local residents, and former insurgents who have surrendered.

The visit concluded with a detailed operational briefing on the activities and peacebuilding initiatives of Operation HADIN KAI, followed by an interactive session, the signing of the visitors’ register, presentation of commemorative souvenirs, and a group photograph.
