ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent, depending on rank.
The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, senior officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The Federal Government said the new remuneration package would increase the annual salary bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
President Tinubu said the salary review reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in protecting the country against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
He noted that members of the Armed Forces who risk their lives to safeguard Nigerians deserve adequate support and appreciation.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to prioritise troop welfare while continuing efforts to modernise the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons and technological equipment.
He stressed that national security remains central to Nigeria’s development, adding that the government would continue to mobilise military and law enforcement resources to combat insecurity and protect lives and property across the country.
The President also urged military personnel to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the nation.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he said.
The salary adjustment is one of the largest welfare packages approved for Nigeria’s Armed Forces in recent years and is expected to boost morale among military personnel engaged in security operations across the country.
