Indian Navy Welcomes INS Sudarshini After Completion of Historic Lokayan 26 Expedition

The Indian Navy has welcomed its sail training ship, INS Sudarshini, following the completion of its landmark Lokayan 26 transoceanic expedition, a global voyage aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation, international relations and professional training for naval personnel.

The expedition, which began at the Naval Base in Kochi on January 20, 2026, was designed to cover approximately 22,000 nautical miles, with planned visits to 18 ports across 13 countries.

The deployment showcased India’s maritime heritage while providing naval and Coast Guard trainees with valuable experience in ocean navigation, sailing and traditional seamanship.

During the voyage, INS Sudarshini participated in international maritime events, including the Sail4th 250 celebrations in the United States and the Grand Parade of Sail associated with Sail Boston 2026.

The ship’s international engagements also provided opportunities for professional exchanges, cultural interactions and cooperation with naval and maritime institutions in partner countries.

The Lokayan 26 mission forms part of India’s broader efforts to strengthen maritime partnerships and advance its vision of cooperation across the Indian Ocean and beyond.

As a sail training vessel, INS Sudarshini plays an important role in preparing naval personnel for the demands of life at sea. Its traditional sailing configuration enables trainees to develop practical skills in navigation, teamwork, discipline and handling challenging weather conditions.

The expedition also highlighted India’s commitment to using maritime diplomacy to deepen international relationships and promote mutual understanding among nations.

The completion of the voyage represents a significant milestone in the Indian Navy’s training and international engagement activities, reinforcing the importance of seamanship and global maritime cooperation.

Lokayan 26 has further demonstrated how long-distance sailing expeditions can combine professional training, cultural diplomacy and international partnership while showcasing India’s naval capabilities and maritime traditions.
