The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has sustained aerial operations against suspected terrorist elements around Rijana in Kaduna State, following intelligence reports indicating plans by the group to carry out kidnapping activities in the area.
A statement by the Air Component, Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 1, disclosed that an A-29 Super Tucano aircraft was deployed on 29 October 2026 for an armed reconnaissance mission over Rijana and adjoining areas following reports of the presence of suspected terrorists, including Dogo Gide and his associates.
The statement explained that during the mission, the aircrew conducted extensive aerial surveillance of the identified location, which featured thick vegetation, riverlines and an incomplete structure.
It disclosed that further reconnaissance of adjoining tracks led to the sighting of suspected terrorist elements around huts and tents concealed under trees. The identified positions were subsequently engaged, while their coordinates were relayed to another airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform for further assessment.
The aircraft also provided air cover and conducted surveillance along the Abuja-Kaduna Main Supply Route (MSR) and adjoining railway corridor to ensure the safety of critical transportation infrastructure.
According to the statement, no threats were observed along the railway corridor, while normal human and vehicular activities were recorded along the Abuja-Kaduna highway. The aircrew also established visual contact with ground troops operating along the route, with the security situation described as calm and stable.
The mission, the statement noted, demonstrated the operational effectiveness of the Air Component in combining armed reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, route surveillance and air cover in a single sortie, while strengthening coordination between air and ground forces.
The Air Component, Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 1, reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operational pressure on terrorist groups through coordinated operations with other security agencies to protect lives, secure critical national infrastructure and restore lasting peace and security across the operational theatre.
