Chinese President Xi Jinping and American President Donald Trump have agreed to build a constructive China-US relationship based on “respect, fairness and reciprocity.”
The agreement was reached during a tea chat at the White House attended by Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, and Trump and his wife, Melania Trump. Xi said his visit marked his first state visit to the United States in 11 years and produced new progress in bilateral relations, including mutually beneficial outcomes in economic and trade cooperation.
“The future of China-U.S. relations is bright,” Xi said, while acknowledging that the path ahead would involve “difficulties and challenges.” He added that he was willing to work with Trump to “write a new chapter in the history of China-U.S. relations.”

Trump described Xi’s state visit as “constructive and very successful,” saying their discussions on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues produced positive outcomes benefiting both countries. He also said he looked forward to maintaining close contact with Xi.
Following the tea meeting, the two couples visited the U.S. National Archives. Xi said the histories and cultures of China and the United States are different, but their peoples share “the same aspiration for a better life.”
Xi said that if both countries “recognise and respect their differences, deepen mutual understanding and learn from each other,” while expanding cooperation and properly managing differences, China-U.S. relations could achieve “steady and sustained growth.”
