Democrats Seize Control of US Congress in Major Midterm Setback for Trump

Democrats have won control of both chambers of the United States Congress following sweeping victories in Tuesday’s midterm elections, ending Republican dominance in Washington and dealing a major political setback to President Donald Trump.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that Democrats secured majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives after flipping at least seven Republican-held Senate seats in traditionally conservative states, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Among the notable victories, James Talarico defeated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to win a Senate seat in Texas, while Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas, marking the first time since 1932 that the state has elected a Democrat to the Senate.
Other Democratic victories included Annie Andrews in South Carolina, Sherrod Brown in Ohio, Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Josh Turek in Iowa.
In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins, who was seeking a sixth term in office.
Democrats also reclaimed control of the House of Representatives, flipping more than two dozen Republican-held districts, including constituencies that supported Trump by significant margins in the 2024 presidential election.
The election results reflect growing voter concerns over the rising cost of living, the war in Iran, allegations of government corruption and policies introduced by the Trump administration.
Trump, who had encouraged voters to view the midterm elections as a referendum on his presidency, sought to distance himself from the Republican losses.
Following the results, he congratulated the Democrats on their victories but maintained that the outcome was not a personal rejection of his leadership.
The Democratic takeover of Congress is expected to give the party greater oversight powers to scrutinise the Trump administration, initiate investigations and challenge aspects of the president’s legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his term.
However, Trump retains his presidential veto power, meaning Democrats will require sufficient Republican support to override any presidential vetoes.
The outcome marks a significant shift in the balance of political power in the United States, with Democrats set to exercise greater influence over federal legislation and oversight.
